How did Room Escape get started — history and origin

How Did Room Escape Get Started?

Origin

It is not precisely known when the first Room Escape game was launched or who its creator was. But the concept of a "Quest" — Escape Room's predecessor — is rooted in Greek mythology, where the main character overcomes obstacles, solves problems, and moves continuously toward a goal according to a story.

The first room-escape-style game in text mode appeared in the 1970s. One of the pioneers was a programmer named William Crowther, who created a game called Colossal Cave Adventure. The goal was to find a way out of a cave by solving puzzles and answering questions — for example: "In front of you is a landslide. How do you overcome it to get out?" Players responded by entering commands. This was a defining moment, and Escape Room games began to evolve rapidly.

Room Escape Types

Today we recognise several types of games in the Escape Room genre:

  • Text-based games — use text analysis in the game engine. Rarely seen today.
  • Graphic adventure games — became popular when joysticks and mice became standard.
  • Puzzle games — the hardest type, requiring you to find specific items and use them in the correct context.
  • Escape Rooms — time-limited missions where you escape by solving puzzles and riddles.
  • Action-adventure — the latest addition, requiring significant physical movement from players.

Over time, the genre moved from screens into the real world. Physical Escape the Room games first became popular in Japan and quickly spread globally.

Room Escape in Reality

The advantages of the live Escape Room experience are clear:

  • You choose the time and theme that suits your group of 2–7 people.
  • It is highly social and requires the cooperation of all participants.
  • No prior knowledge or physical fitness is required.
  • The themed atmosphere delivers a genuinely immersive impression.

New formats will likely continue to evolve from the existing Escape Room trend. But right now, it is one of the best group activities available — and well worth trying.
