7 Tips for Escape Room Beginners

Have you never tried an Escape Room in Stockholm or elsewhere before? If not, it can be hard to know how to approach the activity to get the most out of your first time. This guide gives you seven proven strategies to escape successfully.

Those who play Escape Rooms regularly describe the joy of solving problems as a group under time pressure. Follow these tips and you will not be disappointed.

  1. Explore Everything

Escape Rooms always contain more than meets the eye at first glance. Anything can be a clue or part of the puzzle — touch and examine everything. Open what can be opened, lift what can be lifted, look behind objects, and investigate every detail. Never use physical force; view it as an intellectual adventure, not a physical one.

Some objects or furniture are marked as off-limits with warning tape. During the pre-game briefing, you will always be told the rules. Everything else is fair game — including moving that unmarked dresser to check for hidden symbols behind it.

  2. Divide and Conquer

Split tasks between group members so you work on multiple puzzles simultaneously. Get a head start by running parallel tracks. Sometimes, though, the whole group needs to gather around one task together — for example, when entering a code to unlock something important.

  3. Communicate Loudly

Escape Rooms are won and lost based on how quickly two team members who found related items can connect them. Announce what you find immediately — a code, a key, a pattern. Other team members may be struggling with something that matches exactly what you are holding. Let everyone's ideas contribute to the shared team strength.

  4. Don't Get Stuck — Move On

If you are stuck on an object or puzzle, swap tasks with a teammate. A fresh set of eyes often finds the solution quickly. If no one can crack it within a reasonable time, always ask for a hint — they are always available in Escape Rooms and using them is smart, not a failure.

  5. Keep an Overview of Objects

Create a central area for found items so the whole group can see them. When everyone is carrying something separately it is hard to spot connections. Once an object has been used to solve a puzzle, set it aside — objects are rarely reused in the same game.

  6. No Physical Force

Breaking equipment affects game functionality and safety. Never force open doors, tear things from walls, or climb on furniture. If a game element breaks, your session may have to end early. The Game Master will always explain the specific rules during the briefing before the game starts.

  7. Have Fun and Don't Fear Losing

Solving everything without hints is genuinely hard — and it should be. The challenge is the point. Even if it looks like you will not escape in time, fight on until the clock stops. Most importantly: do not let the fear of losing steal your engagement. Laugh at your mistakes, celebrate small wins, and enjoy the experience together.
